A standard two-player game of cribbage takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Shorter 61-point games run 10–15 minutes, while three- and four-player games can stretch to 45 minutes. How long yours takes comes down to a few simple things.
- Standard game (2 players, to 121): 20–30 minutes
- Short game (to 61): 10–15 minutes
- 3–4 players: 30–45 minutes
Cribbage game length by format
| Format | Target | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players, short game | 61 (once around) | 10–15 min |
| 2 players, standard | 121 (twice around) | 20–30 min |
| 3 players | 121 | 30–40 min |
| 4 players (partners) | 121 | 30–45 min |
| Best-of-3 match | 121 each | 45–90 min |
How many hands is that?
A standard game to 121 usually takes about 8 to 12 hands, with each hand running roughly 2–4 minutes once you include dealing, pegging, and counting. Players typically score somewhere in the low-to-mid teens per hand between pegging and the show, which is why the race to 121 lands in that 20–30 minute window. The cribbage board reflects this directly: 61 points is once around, 121 is twice around.
What affects how long a game takes
- Experience. Beginners count more slowly and double-check scores — expect games to run longer at first. Counting speeds up quickly with practice.
- Target score. A 61-point “once around” game is about half the length of the standard 121.
- Number of players. More players means more hands per round and more counting, so three- and four-handed games take longer.
- House rules. Playing muggins adds a little time, as players check each other’s counts. A skunk can also trigger a rematch.
- Pace. A relaxed game with conversation runs longer than a focused one — and online play is usually the fastest of all.

If you’re short on time, play to 61 instead of 121 — it’s the same game, just once around the board. New to cribbage? Start with how to play cribbage, or practice a few quick rounds with our recommendations for where to play cribbage online.
