What Is Muggins in Cribbage?

Muggins is an optional rule where if a player fails to claim all the points they are entitled to, their opponent can call “muggins” and claim those missed points themselves.

It is not used in casual play but is common in competitive and club games. Always agree whether muggins is in play before the game starts.

What Happens If You Miscount Your Hand?

In casual play, miscounts are usually corrected without penalty. In competitive play with muggins enabled, your opponent can claim any points you missed. If you overclaim points, they must be taken back regardless of the ruleset.

Can You Score Points Out of Turn?

No. Scoring must happen in the correct order — non-dealer’s hand first, then dealer’s hand, then the crib. Scoring out of order is not permitted in official play and can cause disputes over who reached 121 first.

What Is a Go in Cribbage?

A Go occurs during pegging when a player cannot play any card without pushing the running total over 31. They say “Go” and their opponent scores 1 point. The count then resets and play continues with remaining cards.
